Clouds Biog:
Since beginning their foray into music production in early 2009, Clouds have found themselves the subjects of a meteoric rise within blog and DJ circles alike. Comprised of two youngsters, Calum MacLeod and Liam Roberton, Clouds are the latest and freshest to emerge from the seemingly bottomless pool of electronic musical talent that Scotland has to offer. Drawing on influences as diverse as Animal Collective and Green Velvet, their musical dexterity is more than apparent in their musical creations, joining the dots between driving electro, bumping house and crunching techno, all the while retaining a musicality and longevity often found lacking in much of today’s disposable club music. Their low-frequency, bass-driven tracks are sure to give any crowd their money’s-worth and their ever growing list of suitors is testament to that.
Despite their limited output they have managed to attract the attention of some of the biggest and best names in club music, making ardent fans out of the likes of Tiga, Fake Blood, Erol Alkan, Proxy, Annie Mac, Sinden and Boys Noize. Their incredible ‘Liquid / Mauful Sir’ was the debut release for Fake Blood’s Blood Music label, receiving massive support from all corners. Remixes of Underworld, Dem Slackers and Screendeath as well as forthcoming series of EPs for Turbo Recordings and featuring on Boys Noize’s recent DJ Mag mix CD have taken things up a notch.
The next few months look set to be the making of Clouds, make no mistake. Here’s what Theo Keating aka Fake Blood has to say about these young techno upstarts…
“I came across Clouds on Facecloud or some such thing quite a while ago, and thought “Hmm this is distinctly not shit. Unlike the 500 other songs I’ve listened to today. In fact this IS ALL KINDS OF AWESOME. So I played the songs out, they got great reactions every time, and the light bulb went off above my head. I thought “I reckon I should release these.” Pretty astute I’m sure you’ll agree. With remixes already released / on the way for Proxy, Dem Slackers, Urchins, and Coin Operated Boy, things should get quite interesting for CLOUDS over the next while. Enjoy ‘Liquid’ and ‘Mauful Sir’ – the debut release from CLOUDS, and also for my label Blood Music. These tunes really do the trick… In ‘Liquid’ the scene is set by atmospheric techy builds perfect for a big room, and percussion that is reminiscent of a strange spring-loaded machine; before a bassline drops that sounds like a giant striding through a massive warehouse party. His first pass is reasonably friendly, if purposeful. His second visit is less happy, and he’s wielding a large power tool. As for ‘Mauful Sir’, imagine a wooden tennis ball bouncing against a wall. Followed by a remote control helicopter stalling and struggling in mid-air. And then a large speed-boat mounts dry land and proceeds to mow down everyone in the park. But all the time you are dancing hard with your fists clenched, and your eyes to the floor.”
